I bought this ring on plate for the purpose of removing a broken off 100mm x 100mm fence post that remained in the ground. Before this could be done it was necessary to drill out the four holes in the plate so four 120 mm M8 coach bolts could be screwed into the remaining timber. Once this was done and the plate was screwed down tight, a length of heavy duty polypropylene rope was passed through the eye and attached to a long lever. A car jack was then used to apply a lifting force to the pull the post stub out. Unfortunately, in doing so the ring broke. After this happened, the rope was then attached to the U bolt on the plate and once again the jack was used to pull the post stub. This time however the bolts pulled out of the wood. The conclusion is that the plate is perfectly suitable for this kind of job and proved capable of handling a sustained pull of around 1 tonne. However, the ring is not, and will fail at a pull of less than 500kg.
